Steps to Effective Research
In many cases, when looking for our ancestors we would like to know about their place of origin. We would love to pinpoint the location of their birth and residence before their arrival in the U.S. There are several places where you can start looking for that answer before you ever contact Genealogy Explorer.
Relatives
Some of your relatives may have much more information than
you think. Even if your own parents didn't like to talk about their ancestors, there might always be someone in your distant family who may not only know much more about your ancestors, but even have some old documents, letters, or any kind of written material in their possession revealing the place of their origins.
The letters and documents might be written in some foreign language, in a handwriting that might look impossible to decipher. In that case, make a clear copy and send it to Genealogy Explorer where our experts will make sense out of them.
Internet Search
Among other sites on the Internet, there are two sites which we would strongly recommend to you: www.familysearch.org, and www.ancestry.com. Get familiar with both of the sites, and see if they will provide some additional information for you.
Social Security Death Index
The Social Security death index may lead you to the application showing the place of birth of your deceased ancestor.
Census Records
Census records may give you the information about
your ancestor's age, arrival date, nationality of his or
her parents, and the year when he or she was naturalized.
Naturalization Records
In these records, you should look for the Petition for Naturalization (or declaration of intention), which will
give you the most information, such as the date and place of birth, and the date and port of arrival in the U.S.
Vital Records
Church and civil records (birth, marriage, and death) may give you the dates and places in the U.S., as well as in Europe.
Ellis Island Records
Visit www.ellisisland.org, where you can put your ancestor's name and see if his or her arrival record could be found that way. In that case you will need to have a proper spelling of the last name.
Organizing Your Findings
Once you have gathered information about your ancestors, you can organize it in your preferred order, or use an organization form available on the Internet called Personal Ancestral File-PAF-Genealogy Software.
