File Back-Ups, Disaster Recovery and more!
Do you have a plan?
In the last month alone I have seen email accounts hacked - virus infected computers is such bad shape that almost nothing could be salvaged from their hard drives.
Question: I use an online website to do my gnealogy and they have all my files. I'm safe, right? ...
Answer: Sure, actually you don't have your files. They do. Don't pay your bill or if they crash a server what then? You are in Ohio and their servers are in Utah and they have a power outage... what then?
Question: I use that popular "box" program and I drop copies of all my files in there and it makes copies on all my computers, so I am protected!
Answer: Sorry, no you arent. Do this test. Set your laptop and your pc down together. Create a file in your online folder and watch it appear on your other pc. really cool isn't it? Now delete that folder from the pc and watch what happens... Yep, that's right it just got deleted from your file too. Great to have, fool proof...NO! Did you read recently how they left their security wide open and anyone could access files without a password. Oh my. Is that who you want to trust?
Question: What is the best way for me to protect my valuable business files?
Answer: Why didn't you say geneaolgy files? Well, all your files related to geneaolgy and your business are important aren't they? What good is doing 100 hours of professional genealogy work if your computer crashes and you can't get paid because you don't have access to your bills or whatever system you use for billing. Is your client going to accept this for an answer? Sorry I lost all your work? Or I took an extra two weeks because my computer crashed? There is no one answer to this question. There are many ways to achieve the same goals, it is just a matter of understanding the best plan for you and your business.
Question: I am protected. I use the geeks!
Answer: Don't get me wrong. These folks do great work. As long as all you need are the basics like having your operating system installed on your pc. If your computer breaks (crashes) and one of these companies, re-installs your software on your computer without first performing disaster recover techniques on you files, then they are probably gone forever.
Question: If my computer crashes, you can get my files back then, right?
Answer: Maybe, maybe not. The time to ask this question is before your computer crashes. The reason I say this is because we all know the answer to this one. It is going to crash. The question is when and will you be protected?
Question: What is my first step?
Answer: Send me an emaiI and we can go from there.
